The Destruction and Resurrection of Smokey Hollow

Smokey Hollow, named for the perpetual haze generated by wood-burning stoves and a nearby municipal incinerator that settled in the low-lying topography, was a tight-knit African American community established in the 1890s just east of the Florida State Capitol. This centrally located neighborhood, which recorded high levels of employment and homeownership, was systematically demolished starting in the 1960s when state urban renewal policies used eminent domain to clear the land for the Apalachee Parkway and government expansion.
