Founded in 1963, Gulf Specimen Marine Laboratory is a nonprofit organization in Florida’s Panhandle dedicated to marine education, research, and conservation. It supplies living marine specimens to schools and research labs across the U.S., Canada, and Europe, and plays a key role in studying endangered species and sustainable ocean farming.

GSML features a hands-on nature center where over 20,000 visitors a year—many from school groups—interact with a wide variety of Gulf creatures, from sea stars to sea turtles. Unlike traditional aquariums, GSML's exhibits constantly change as new specimens are brought in by local collectors. Through touch tanks, guided field trips, and educational exhibits, visitors learn about marine life and the importance of preserving Florida’s fragile coastal ecosystems.

In addition to public education, GSML supports biomedical research and partners with institutions seeking potential medical breakthroughs from the sea. Its mission is to spark curiosity, foster understanding, and encourage stewardship of the ocean’s rich biodiversity.
