The Leon County Public Library was founded in May 1955. Its first free public library opened on March 21, 1956, inside The Columns, one of the area's oldest surviving antebellum homes, located at Park Avenue and Adams Street. The library began with nearly 5,000 books housed within its 5,000-square-foot space.
